TFC (The Filipino Channel) Balitang America recognizes Arnel Calvario as a Filipino Champion of the Arts.
I am so humbled to have Arnel Calvario as such a positive role model in my life, and in the lives of many Filipino-Americans and many growing dancers. If you’ve ever met Arnel, you’d know he’s exuding positive energy and inspiration. There’s not a negative bone in his body, and his face is always covered in smiles.
Not only did he found Kaba Modern and is the President of the International Board of Directors for Culture Shock, he’s also a doctor of occupational therapy. I’ve always looked up to him as a dancer, leader, and as a scholar. What your Filipino parents tell you about not dancing so you can focus only on school is false—if Arnel can be a doctor and start movements in the dance community, so can you. He’s part of my inspiration to go back to school and pursue terminal degrees.
Arnel always stresses the importance of paying it forward. If we remember to do this, there’s nothing that we can’t accomplish. I would be so grateful to be able to leave behind a tenth of the legacy that he does.
In 2007, I was going on my 2nd year dancing with Culture Shock DC. We were fortunate enough to get invited to perform at the “7th International Folk Art Festival” in China, where we represented the US for Hip Hop dance. Here’s a picture of some of us after one of our performances. This is definitely one of my markers of what seems like my beginning. I don’t know how or why my mom let me go, but if it weren’t for her, I’m not sure what else I’d be doing right now=)
Yeah, you lucky ass!!!! Haha I’m going to show mommy this post. :)
